Box Office Battle: 'The Lion King' wins weekend again with $75.5M

"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.

Disney's (DIS) "The Lion King" took in $75.5M in its sophomore outing for a domestic cume of $350M and a global cume of $962.7M. As the movie approaches the $1B mark, Disney also announced that it has now reached $7.67B in 2019 global ticket sales, surpassing the industry record it set back in 2016 with $7.61B. "The Lion King" received 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.

BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Sony's (SNE) "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" earned $40M in its debut weekend to mark the best opening of Quentin Tarantino's career. Behind it was Sony and Disney-owned Marvel Studios' "Spider-Man: Far From Home," which grossed another $12.2M domestically for a global cume of $1.03B. Another Disney title, "Toy Story 4," placed number four with $9.9M as it nears the $400M mark domestically. Rounding out the top five, Viacom (VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's "Crawl" grossed an estimated $4M for a global tally of $45.9M.
